Work in Progress at the Great North Museum/Hancock

The fire protection to sixteen columns has been completed at the Great North Museum in Newcastle. The columns are in two main rooms which will house some of the museum’s exhibitions.

The highly decorative castings utilising Mecatiss Interactive Columns made from International Paint’s Interchar 212 were selected for the high durability and aesthetically uniform appeal with no design joints.

Thin-film Intumescent

As opposed to the niche market of cast epoxy intumescent, thin-film intumescent is a utilitarian solution for the majority of fire protection requirements. It does however have certain drawbacks:

- the successful application of thin-film intumescent paints on site depends entirely on the quality of the subcontractors’ workmanship (and is subject to the time pressures of completing a job on schedule)

- the thicker the coating, the less decorative the finish (resulting in an ‘orange peel’ texture which can seriously undermine the aesthetic value of the system)

- not only is skilled application required, quality and primer compatibility checks are also imperative

- application also requires precautions to be taken against over-spraying

- even if the original application is carried out diligently, the finish is difficult to keep consistent when repairing damage over time

- repair is difficult to hide and normally requires a major part of any column to be re-sprayed

- thin-film intumescent is not particularly suitable for exterior applications (especially very exposed ones)

Mecatiss Interact Fire Solutions Secures Ten Columns in Dublin

When it came to the external columns on the ground floor of International House in Dublin, Ireland, Frank Hughes of Forrest Hill Architects insisted that Interactive Columns be specified in spite of great financial pressure to do otherwise. In fact if Mr Hughes had had his way all the 74 columns, both internal and external, would be in Interact Fire Solutions’ highly durable and aesthetically superior systems.
Road Side View of Construction Phase

Mecatiss Interact’s products are manufactured from International Paint’s Interchar 212. Once installed the material is totally impervious to any conditions the prevailing climate can throw at the system. Epoxy intumescent is completely weather proof and very easy to maintain. Unlike many competitive products it does not depend on the top coat to maintain the integrity of the system below. In fact the top coat is for aesthetic reasons only,  allowing any number of surface coatings to be used.

International House is the third Dublin project to receive Interactive Columns. Harvey Nichols at the Dumdrum Shopping Centre and the offices attached have received Interact’s casings. There were also a number of column casings supplied to Molex near Shannon Airport.

There are seven Interactive Columns (direct fixing) and three Interactive Casings (secondary cladding) being used for the ground floor and penthouse of the  International House development.   Interactive Secondary Cladding Casings were specified because the client did not want the problems of integrity associated with other secondary cladding systems (see www.interactfire.co.uk and select presentations) highlighted in a recent ASFP (Association of Specialist Fire Protection) guidelines which advises of the dangers caused by secondary cladding systems and featured in an articles in both the UK and Ireland.

Invitations will go out to all the major architects who can see for themselves the installation and superb finish achieved by the highly professional team of installers from Fireseal Contracts in Dublin.

Interact Fire Solutions Secures Fourth Dublin Project

It was just a hole in the ground when Mecatiss Interact Fire Solutions went to site to discuss the plan for Interactive Columns to this prestigious shopping centre in the very heart of the Dublin retail centre next to Stephens Green.

Gaiety Shopping Centre – Dublin
The Gaiety is a mixed development scheme and is specified by A & D Wejchert and Partners with building works by Micheal McNamara & Co., Interact cast epoxy product was approved as the preferred method of fire protection for feature steelwork.

Project Specifications:
The size of castings ranges from 193 diameter inside the store to 406 diameter to the external envelope. When completed, Interactive Columns will contribute to this outstanding building with 192 linear metres of castings using 3,000 kg of International Paint’s Interchar 212 epoxy intumescent.

International Paint’s Interchar 212 offers two to three hours fire protection to hollow sections and up to three hours fire protection as a secondary cladding system.

The Gaiety Project, with the help of the Fireseal Group in Tallaght (the installation subcontractors) is due for completion late in 2008 when it will compete as one of the most modern shopping centres in Dublin.

Announcing a revolution in how cast epoxy intumescent can be produced in future

Working in tandem with two of the manufacturers of the base material, Mecatiss Interact Fire Solutions has completed the R&D on a new approach to the use of cast epoxy intumescent for fire protection in the construction industry. By successfully removing the need for a wire mesh, whilst maintaining the structural integrity of the product, we can bring to market an exclusive product that will have dramatic cost savings and added aesthetic advantages.

How it all began ...

The medium of epoxy intumescent was originally developed for the offshore market to offer exceptional fire protection to structural steel. The properties of the material had to withstand the rigours of the North Sea in order to protect oil platforms for up to 3 hours in hydrocarbon fire conditions. The properties of epoxy intumescent—including chemical, impact and weather resistance—also needed to withstand jet fire blowouts and explosion. Such benefits have obvious application for many commercial projects, like hospitals, schools and prestigious office/retail projects. The explosion resistance means that important government and city institutions can also be protected against potential terrorist attack.

The development of cast epoxy intumescent—and the need for a wire mesh
An integral part of the system has always been the use of a wire mesh. This supports the intumescent when it has re-acted (i.e. intumesced or expanded) during jet fire conditions.

Interact's specialism is casting epoxy intumescent for cellulosic (i.e. normal building) conditions. This is most evident in their flagship product, Interactive Columns. Until recently, it was necessary to incorporate the wire mesh within the casting. The production method was limited, therefore, to a minimum thickness of 10mm to ensure material flow during casting. In addition, the fire test data was predicated on the wire mesh being continuous around the structure. In order to ensure compliance with the test data it was necessary to re-instate the continuity of the wire mesh within the two half-shells previously cut to allow for installation. This was done by fitting a wire tie (3 per l m around the casting following the installation of the casting) and placing it in the prepared groove.

The drawbacks of this requirement were both practical and aesthetic. From a manufacturing point of view, the wire mesh limited the length of casting to 1 – 1.25 m. This restriction was because the interference of the mesh creates a risk of air pockets forming. From the aesthetic perspective, the wire tie grooves required a substantial amount of decoration to conceal their presence. Mecatiss Interact has never claimed to be able to eradicate entirely the slight 'witness' marks created during this operation, and recommends a slightly textured finish to help conceal these minor imperfections.

Now, there's another way ... meshless!
Recently, the rule book has been re-written. Two of the four raw material manufacturers have re-tested epoxy intumescent specifically for the construction market. This major development has eliminated the need for any wire mesh—with obvious advantages to cast epoxy casings. Castings can now be made much longer and are only really limited to the strength of the mould used to form the circular casing. With no tying wire now required to achieve the necessary test data, the aesthetic benefits are obvious.

Mecatiss Interact have perfected the art—and now have their own manufacturing facility
Taking advantage of this revolutionary development, Mecatiss Interact have re-engineered the manufacturing methods to achieve a much more accurate, concentric casting which would have proved difficult with the wire mesh in. Manufacturing a casting which is two metres long, with no tying wires, means that a standard floor level installation will require decoration to dress just two vertical seams and one horizontal. Under the old method, there would be 11 horizontal grooves to dress, as well as the two vertical. Future development may result in eliminating even one horizontal seam, resulting in bespoke lengths to suit the site project requirements.

There are limitations, of course. For example, we do not advise that this length of casting should be used all the way up an atrium column. There are health and safety considerations to take into account when working at height. In such cases, we would advise that the installation should revert to one metre lengths following the first 3.5 metres.

Costs are reduced … and appearances enhanced
The effect on the cost of installation and the final look of the product are both significant. The cost of installation could be as much as 50% less than the previous method. The finishes available would be virtually limitless, in terms of texture or super smooth, offering an increased range to meet the demanding world of architectural design.

In order to protect and capitalise on these new innovations in cast epoxy intumescent, Mecatiss Interact Fire Solutions has managed to secure its own manufacturing facility. The experience gained in the casting industry means that Mecatiss Interact is guaranteed to provide the best solution to hollow section fire protection at costs which directly competes with many other costed alternatives.

Mecatiss Interact is keen to work with architects and specifiers to analyse costing alternatives—and show how the meshless product not only compares on price but also how it gives true integrity to the fire protection system. Mecatiss Interact will continue to embark on new research and development projects designed to maximise the use of epoxy intumescent by the passive fire protection industry.

After 16 projects using Interchar 212 by International Paint’s Interchar 212 as a casting, Mecatiss Interact Fire Solutions has secured its second project in the heart of London. This follows projects in Scotland, the Midlands, North East and South East of England and Ireland.

This interesting opportunity was generated by the kind permission of the main contractor, Cubit Construction who is allowing guided tours of the work in progress so that architects and engineers can see first hand the skill required for the installation of the fire protection castings.

Sajen 2000 are the subcontractors installing 18 columns circa 4 metres high over three floors to recently installed steel columns at this refurbishment project.

While requiring just 60minutes fire protection, Interactive Columns were chosen for the exceptional wear properties in  areas of heavy people traffic predominant an office environment.

Two hours fire protection throughout the structure

The Gaiety mixed use development opened it doors to retail customers in time for Christmas shopping. The project incorporates 139, 219, 273 and 406 diameter castings on the project. There are some 350 metres of columns receiving Interactive Column castings offering two hours fire protection throughout the structure.

The project is situated in the heart of Dublin next to the Gaiety Theatre and opposite the Stephens Green Shopping Centre.

mecatiss rain fire corrosion protectionThe remaining floors which are allocated to offices and accommodation are still in construction. As usual with this type of project, delays due to climatic condition would impact on the schedule which would not be acceptable. The castings do not suffer from the same conditions as can be expected with thin film applications. Damage to off site coatings in the erection phase was another deciding factor. Repair of thin film is always a problem when high aesthetics are demanded. The casting can be installed in phases when suitable climate conditions are available for only a short time. As the casting are cured a simple method of rain protection is sufficient and provided the castings are installed above 5 degrees C, normal for wet applications, the casting itself will protect against any frost damage, ideal in winter conditions.

The architects A & D Wejchert and Partners of Dublin selected the casting for their high durability aesthetics and exceptional fire protection qualities. The architect’s team said it was delighted with the results and that the whole system met with their high standard of expectation.
